Love Is Blameless 愛沒有錯 – Elva Hsiao 贕亞軒
Arranger

The brief arrived through a long-standing creative relationship with producer Kevin Q, a piano vocal demo of a song cut for Elva Hsiao, one of Mandopop’s most enduring artists, whose debut album sold an estimated 1.5 million copies across Asia. The instruction was simple: interpret it.

Before touching the arrangement, I requested additional reference material from the creative team. What I received was a storyboard for the music video, the visual world the song would inhabit. As with most of my arrangement work, I needed to understand the emotional and narrative context before making any sonic decisions. The storyboard gave me that.

The demo’s piano vocal intimacy was the foundation and I had no intention of replacing it. What it needed was texture, something that would deepen the emotional weight of the song without disrupting its restraint. I built the arrangement around a distinctive string palette, drawing extensively from Spitfire Audio’s orchestral libraries. The articulations I chose were specific and deliberate, selected for their ability to carry emotional nuance rather than simply provide orchestral colour.

Additional drums and atmospheric effects were layered carefully to elevate the narrative arc without overwhelming it. The overall direction was a classic cinematic piano strings ballad with a contemporary sensibility, familiar enough to feel inevitable, specific enough to feel considered.

A live string recording session had been planned. Upon hearing the completed mock-up, both the artist and producer chose to retain it as the final strings. The mock-up became the record.

Love Is Blameless was released in November 2023.
