Lullaby – On Spec Pitch for Marie Curie
Songwriter, Producer, Arranger, Mix
Lullaby began as a demo from my long-time London collaborator, Simon Pollitt. The original concept was written by Paul Baker, drawing from personal experience as the emotional foundation of the song.
After receiving the demo, I proposed refinements to the lyrics and melody, along with structural changes including the addition of a bridge to strengthen the narrative arc. These developments took shape over a series of Zoom sessions between the three of us, focusing on clarifying intent, refining lyrical phrasing, and shaping the overall direction of the production.
My role during these sessions was to challenge and distill the material, suggesting alternative wording where necessary, identifying melodic adjustments, and mapping the emotional progression of the song. The goal was not to reinvent the piece, but to sharpen its impact and ensure that every section supported the core sentiment.
The original piano-and-vocal intimacy was preserved as the foundation. To elevate the emotional weight, I introduced subtle textural strings and choir elements, enhancing depth while maintaining the song’s restraint.
The lead vocal was recorded remotely, with talent sourced specifically for tonal character and emotional suitability. I handled the final mix, ensuring cohesion between the intimate core of the arrangement and its expanded cinematic textures.
Lullaby was later submitted as an on-spec pitch to the Marie Curie Foundation in the UK for their Christmas campaign, where it was selected for consideration.
